Upgrading your transmission cooler on your 4WD is a no-brainer—especially in Aussie conditions
Heat is the number one killer of automatic gearboxes. Towing a caravan or boat, crawling in low range, beach driving, or slogging it out on hot days all push transmission temps through the roof. Once the fluid gets too hot, it breaks down fast, loses its ability to protect, and that’s when clutches start slipping and gearboxes die early.
A HPD transmission cooler keeps temps under control, even when you’re working the rig hard. Cooler oil means smoother shifts, better towing performance, and way less stress on the internals. It also helps stop that burnt-oil smell and the dreaded limp mode when temps spike.

The payoff? Longer gearbox life, fewer expensive repairs, and more confidence when you’re loaded up or off the beaten track. Compared to the cost of a transmission rebuild, installing a HPD Transcooler is cheap insurance—and it’s one mod you’ll be glad you did every time you hitch up or hit the tracks.
HPD Transcoolers are extremely popular because they are proven to reduce transmission destroying temperatures.
In our thorough dyno testing of a 2021 Isuzu D-Max, we recorded a drop in the transmission oil temperature of 13°C.
This significant temperature reduction was achieved despite a rise in ambient air temperature of 10°C after the transcooler was installed later in the day.

Even better cooling in real-world environments
Some customers report even better results. For example David’s Scan Gauge III showed an incredible 52°C reduction in transmission oil temperature towing his 24ft caravan.
Without a HPD Transcooler, David’s transmission oil temperature was a frightening 116°C towing his 2600kg caravan up a hill.
After fitting a HPD Transcooler, David recorded his transmission oil temperature at 64°C, driving up the same hill on a 26°C day.
A 50 mm thick bar-and-plate core transmission cooler offers a big step up in heat control, especially for hard-working 4WDs. The thicker core increases internal oil capacity and surface area, allowing more heat to be absorbed and shed efficiently, while the bar-and-plate construction is tougher and more resistant to vibration and stone damage than tube-and-fin designs.
This means more stable transmission temperatures when towing, touring, or driving in soft sand, helping prevent heat-related fluid breakdown and extending transmission life. The result is smoother shifting, better protection under load, and peace of mind knowing your transmission can handle harsh Aussie conditions without cooking itself.
